This news is good for two reasons, specially for the community networks of our continent. First, we understand that this is the first time that a group of community networks, grouped together under a non-for-profit entity, receives its own IPv4, IPv6 and ASN resources. Second, a precedent has been set inside LACNIC, whose Board has decided to exonerate us (AlterMundi) with the 100% of the cost of the AS the first year, with the possibility of renewal of these conditions anually based on the good use we make of the resources.
We want to thank specially to Anthony Harris, executive director of the Argentinean Chamber of Internet (CABASE), for his efforts to visibilize our case inside LACNIC. We also want to thank to Oscar Robles Garay, Executive Director of LACNIC, for following our application and for handling the proposal to the Board for their consideration.
We hope that in the following months AFTIC (the national entity for telecommunications) determine over our request to obtain the permit for non-for-profit operators, which could close a process of years of community networks seeking for official recognition.
We welcome the free peering with all the networks interested in peering with us!
